His name is Alexandar McCall Smith.
The book is The Full Cupboard of Life,
one of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series.
It is about life in Africa.
Very enjoyable!

Greetings from your sis-in-law! We left for Florida on Dec. 27th,right after our kids all left. Today 1/9 we just got to a campground with internet connection, so I can see your blog! Just so you know, I'm going home to a house that is still all decorated for Christmas! Since we have to be back at work on Monday, our house will be in a messy de-decorating mode for a while! What a great time we had with Whiteheads, Seddons, Webbers, Caughills, & Wetzels! Love you, Connie
