As you know, I am very thankful for the FREE WIG I received from the Cancer Society. Here is the REST OF THE STORY. Last week we went into a wig shop to buy a wig frame to protect my (free) investment. I thought it would be good to treat it well since we will be together for some months to come. So I asked the saleslady about a wig frame or form or whatever they call them especially for drying it when I wash it. This lady was a bit harried, being the only person working in the shop at lunchtime. However that didn't excuse her behaviour in my opinion. Now, I do have to say that I was prepared for the fact that someone working with wigs would know immediately that I was wearing a wig. And she did. She also asked if I was "in treatment," to which I said, "yes." She then told me she was a "survivor," which I took to mean "cancer survivor." Good. We're on the same page. Right? She then proceeded to ask me if I had gotten the wig at something which was other than Cancer Society, but must have been what she meant. She said, "Of course, they don't have the funds for the best wigs," or something to that effect. But she proceeded to "fix" it up for me. Didn't bother to ask if I wanted her help either.
We looked around the shop, and I must say they had gorgeous wigs. Paul was especially taken by one. When we inquired about the price of it, she said it was $600!!! Yikes! She said it was all hand tied. Mine evidently was hand tied in the front top and worth about $300. She then proceeded to tell me that if I took into account how much I paid to have my hair cut about every 6 weeks, it would pay for the wig. I do have my hair cut about every 6 weeks, don't I? I said that I did. She asked how much I pay for a hair cut. I said, "$15." "$15!! Don't you feel awful paying below minimum wage?" No, I don't. I told her I go to the hairdresser's house, didn't say it takes her about 1/2 hour, I get a good cut, she's home with her boys when they are out of school and she can do another cut in the other half hour. I don't think $30 an hour, in your own home is too bad. She probably gets to claim some business expenses too. Also, this is A CUT, no wash, no styling, just the cut which is what I want. If I do have it styled, I rush out to the car and put it into some sort of shape just as I did this time after her "fix."
It cheers my heart when people tell me the wig looks, good, natural, like me. That is what I am aiming for right now. While the $600 wig was absolutely lovely, I told Paul it doesn't look like me. This is not my time for a make over, thank you very much.
So that's the rest of the story! ***I forgot to mention that our insurance would pay $150 on a wig. That still sounds like $450 to me. I am very thankful for all the kind people who support cancer and, most of all, I thank the Lord who takes care of it all. I am blessed!
