A History Lesson

Last Thursday we went to the funeral of another dear friend who is now in glory with her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Annie was a wonderful lady with an open house and a meal for anyone who was in the area. We enjoyed her hospitality many times. She had a way of making everyone feel welcome and comfortable. We saw many "old" friends and had a wonderful time visiting with them. Isn't it wonderful to celebrate the life and homegoing of a true believer?

After the funeral we did a little cross-border business. We mailed the Raggedy Ann outfit for our Cutie Pie and also some goodies for the boys! We visited Marden's, of course, some antique shops and then drove down Highway 1 a ways. We stopped in at a National Historic site across from St. Croix Island which is in the St. Croix River and was inhabited by French colonists in 1604. They spent a disastrous winter there, losing 1/2 of the settlers to scurvy. On the island they did not have access to fresh water (the river is salt water fed) or game and the river became impassable. The next year they migrated to Port Royal, Nova Scotia, which was a healthier place for them.

The historic site is on the shore looking out at the island
which is not inhabited.

It is a beautiful place.
We enjoyed it even though the day was cold and windy.

Looking out at the island

There were several statues depicting the way of life the settlers must have lived.
I was interested to see the shoes pictured here. They look like wooden shoes.

Here is a Passamaquoddy native. They were friendly and peaceful.

A model of how the village may have looked
